Ellie took a little fall today, well, a fall that had a pretty loud bang of her head involved. She reached for a table and missed with her hand, but met the table with her head. She starts crying, I go to her and pick her up because it was such a loud crack and she does the whole scream and hold your breath thing. She has done this before, but this time she holds it for a really, really, reeeeaaaalllly long time. So, I'm a little freaked out by the length of time that she holds her breath, but then she finally takes a deep breath in and I'm thinking "Oh good she's ok." Then the trauma starts. She then suddenly goes limp in my arms, her eyes roll back in her head and she's out and not breathing. I FREAK!!
My sister was there with me, we were actually at her house and my sister FREAKS even more than I do and she calls 911. About two seconds after we get through to 911, Ellie takes in a deep breath, sits up, looks around and seems to be fine. I'm still a little worried and shaken by the whole experience. Then I start to think like a logical person who knows a little bit about the human body and realize that she probably just passed out from holding her breath and that she's probably really ok. Now I'm thinking that the ambulance doesn't need to come screaming up to my sisters house, but you can't just say oh, never mind 911 operator, I just had a crazy mother moment and we don't need you now.
About 5 minutes later her comes a cop and an ambulance and a fire engine and then my sister's neighbors start to show up. Long story short, I feel stupid and Ellie checks out just fine. The medics tell me the same conclusion that I came to while in my logical thinking state and they don't feel that they need to rush her to the hospital in an ambulance, thank goodness. They do however think that I need to take her in and just have her looked at by the doctor, but they said that was up to me. Well, now I'm calm and feel good that she's not really hurt or suffering from a brain injury and I'm think that I'll just keep an eye on her and that I don't need to rush off to the doctor. However, my sister has called my mom and called my dad and mom comes up and she thinks that I need to rush Ellie up to the doctor RIGHT NOW! So, to ease my mother's mind (which my mom IS one of those over protective, worry about every little bump, kind of mothers) I decide I'll run her up to the doctor.
So, after all that the doctor said she looked fine and that babies (this age especially) are very well known for holding their breath until they pass out and that, although it is scary, it is normal and that it doesn't cause them any harm. Therefore, I had to once again leave the doctor's office feeling like an overly protective mother who rushes their kid to the hospital over every little splinter that they get.
I don't even know why I'm writing about this in my blog...I should probably just delete this whole thing so that no one else can see how dumb I was today. Oh well! Maybe it will at least give you a laugh!

Don't feel bad...I would have done the same thing, and I would definetly not classify myself as overprotective. That actually happened to my little sister at about the age of 2 and my mom did end up having the ambulance rush her to the hospital. After that, Lori realized how much it freaked my mom out and whenever she wanted anything, she would just hold her breath until she got it! (Little pill)
That is funny now.. I would be freaking out too..but I just blow into their face and they usually take a breath. It works for me. That is too funny..at least how you wrote your story...hey..at least you didn't hurt your child..Luke grabbed my curling iron and has blisters all over his pointer finger and thumb. It is so sad and I feel horrible. The dr. at least said it wasn't the worst burn she has seen..she had seen a lot worse! I still feel horrible. Thanks for the laugh!
too funny -yes now in the past, we've all had those moments and I hat the feeling leaving the docs office thinking, yes I'm a retard but better safe than sorry. I'm so glad Lance gave my your blog address. Ellie is a sweetie and I'm excited to see more pics of her.
